Rise for Irish visitor numbers

Ireland has reported a significant jump in the number of visitors coming to its shores at the beginning of this year.

According to the country's Central Statistics Office, the number of tourists from mainland Europe coming to Ireland for a holiday was 26 per cent higher in January than during the same month a year before.

Overall, eight per cent more visitors came to the Emerald Isle in January, with 440,900 people in total visiting the country.

The number of tourists coming to the country from the UK dropped by 1.7 per cent, although still made up 228,000 visitors, showing that holidays to Ireland are still a great favourite with many Britons.

Meanwhile, ten per cent more visitors came to the country from North America and Canada.

Among the activities lined up to tempt holidaymakers to visit Ireland in coming weeks are the historic Irish Grand National on April 9th, held just outside Dublin, and seen by many as one of the staples of the Irish sporting calendar.

Music lovers may also appreciate the Heineken Green Energy Festival scheduled for the May bank holiday weekend, promising performances from the shining stars of modern indie and pop.
